Gytha of Bebbenburg (known as Glenna of Bebbenburg in the TV series) was a minor character in both The Saxon Stories novel series, and The Last Kingdom television series. She was the wife of Ealdorman Uhtred and the step-mother of Uhtred and Uhtred.

Biography[]

The Saxon Stories[]

Gytha of Bebbenburg was the third wife of Ealdormen Uhtred and the step-mother of Uhtred and Uhtred (Osbert). She had 9 children with Ealdorman Uhtred, none of which lived to see their eight year. After the death of Ealdorman Uhtred, Gytha remarried his brother Ælfric, and they conceived a child.

The Last Kingdom[]

Season 1[]

Bebbanburg, Northumbria; When Ealdorman Uhtred returns from the shore with news of the Danes incoming, Glenna is immediately panicked. She suggests that they get Father Beocca to pray for them. Later, after the death of the eldest Uhtred, Glenna watches as Osbert is baptized and renamed as Uhtred. ("Episode 1.1")

It is assumed that she passed away sometime after as she is not seen again.

  • The name Gytha or Gȳða comes from Old Norse and is a diminutive of the name Guðríðr. The name is made up of the words gyþ, which means "battle, war", and fríðr which means "beautiful".
    • The name Glenna is the feminine version of the name Glenn which is of Gaelic origins. The name comes from the word gleann which means "valley".
  • In the books, Uhtred describes Glenna as "...much younger then my father. She was a small, plump woman with a mass of fair hair". He also mentions that she had "a great reverence for Saint Cuthbert whom she worshipped because he worked miracles". ("The Last Kingdom").
  • Gytha/Glenna was a noble; she married the ealdorman of Bebbanburg.
